Years of potential life lost before age 75 (per 100,000 population)

Measuring unnecessary and preventable death<sdt id="-966653169" sdttag="goog_rdk_0">s</sdt> can help policy makers and public health agencies prioritize resources to help their citizens live longer. We focus on measuring deaths that occur before age 75 because these deaths are largely preventable, compared to deaths at older ages.1,2 Communities where many people die at young ages often face social and economic disadvantages that <sdt id="-59561208" sdttag="goog_rdk_2">affect </sdt>community well-being.

We can also use the measure of premature death to compare differences <sdt id="1486902738" sdttag="goog_rdk_4">among </sdt>populations or geographic areas and better understand risk factors for early deaths. For instance, we know that premature death is more likely for those living in the Southern U.S.<sdt id="1784617340" sdttag="goog_rdk_6"> and </sdt>in rural areas<sdt id="-1014384147" sdttag="goog_rdk_8"> and among </sdt>males, <sdt id="-846705895" sdttag="goog_rdk_10">B</sdt>lacks, people with lower education, the unemployed, and those who have limited access to a physician.3,4

Over the past decades, the rates of premature death from all causes have declined as preventive services and government health policies have improved.5 However, significant variation in premature death rates remains a serious health equity concern.

This metric includes the total number of years of life lost in a population before the age of 75.

				<li>The metric uses age 75 as a cut<sdt id="-734859851" sdttag="goog_rdk_12">-</sdt>off<sdt id="1056352003" sdttag="goog_rdk_14">, which </sdt>captures the burden of chronic disease and loss of economic productivity better than a younger cut-off age.4,6</li>
				<li>Since the metric includes premature death as a result of all causes, it can be used to measure the impact of broad population health interventions, programs, and policies.</li>
				<li><sdt id="-367529601" sdttag="goog_rdk_20">This metric is available broken down by race and ethnicity, which can help target resources and interventions for groups that historically have been underrepresented.</sdt></li>
